Enalapril is used to treat and prevent heart failure and high blood pressure. It decreases the formation of compounds and hormones that constrict blood vessels in animals with heart and vascular disease. This medication belongs to a class of drugs known as angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors (ACE-inhibitors). ACE-inhibitors are classified as vasodilators because of their relaxing effect on blood vessels. ACE-inhibitors also reduce concentrations of harmful chemicals and hormones that injure the heart muscle in animals with heart failure.

How it works:

Enalapril is an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor. It works by blocking an enzyme in the body that is needed to produce a substance that causes blood vessels to tighten. As a result, the blood vessels relax. This lowers blood pressure and increases the supply of blood and oxygen to the heart.
